PostHeaderIcon DIY 4th of July Chalkboard Flag

Fourth of July decorations!!  Sometimes the brightness of the red, white and blue tend to run on the side of kitsch, but this is a great version for those of you who want to go patriotic in a more understated fashion.  And who doesn’t love chalkboard art?  If you don’t, sorry… I’m a total sucker for trends.

Supplies:
  • Chalkboard
  • Chalk Marker
  • Chalk
  • Ruler
  • Calculator
Instructions:
Math… ::shudder::… I’m going to admit that I have an intense dislike of math and could not figure out how to correctly break down the measurements to get perfectly even spaced lines.  The fabulous part though is that this flag is a chalkboard and A. it doesn’t have to be perfect and B. the lines are erasable!  Your chalkboard may be an even space to work on, but unfortunately mine was not.

I finally broke down the board into quarters and then eyeballed (and reworked A LOT) the spacing for the lines.  Give yourself some grace on this project as it doesn’t have to be perfect to be adorable.  What finally helped was breaking the flag down into 4 quarters.  The upper left corner obviously being for the stars and to the right of that quarter was 7 lines – 4 white, 3 blank.  The bottom half consisted of 6 lines – 3 white and 3 blank.  I used the regular chalk to mark my lines, erase and repeat 400 times.

Once you’re satisfied with the spacing of your lines and the lines drawn are drawn on with the white chalk marker, fill them in how you wish!  I liked the messier feel of these dashed lines.  You could also fill in with white and red chalk!  I liked the white on white as I think we will be adding this to our gallery wall as a reminder for the whole year.

Now a choice again of whether to eyeball it or do some math!  The choice is yours!  I just worked with my chalk and eyeballed where the 8 across and 6 down stars would be placed.  Mark what should be the center of each star with a smidgen of regular chalk.  Really… cut yourself some slack and just go for it!

Add stars!  Doing a bunch of these little stars was a throw back to 8th grade and doodling in my notebook!  It was a lot of fun!  :)  The chalk marker was quite forgiving and you can easily wipe the board down with water, let it dry some and start again.

Voila!  Display (maybe with some cute burlap bunting banner) and enjoy your Fourth of July celebration!  I’ve been wanting an American Flag up in our living room and this one will be staying put for the year.  I may even search out a larger chalkboard and create a larger flag.  This frame was purchased at Hobby Lobby and the frame was so nice that I didn’t even have to paint, stain or do anything to it!  Other frames you may choose to whitewash or paint if they’re not to your liking.  I hope you enjoy your 4th and this adorable addition to your holiday collection!
